Bridging Japan's Timber Heritage With the World

We are a family-owned business connecting the world to Japan's rich and diverse wood heritage, built on a legacy of trusted relationships and deep knowledge of Japan's domestic timber industry.

Mokuzai (trading as North21 Limited), was founded to streamline the sourcing of native lumber from Japan.

By eliminating traditional barriers like complex supply chains, cultural differences, and limited availability, we provide a transparent and reliable way to source unique wood products across Japan.

All of our timber is sustainably sourced and fully compliant with Japan's GOHO framework, ensuring responsible forestry practices and ethical supply. This commitment to sustainability is at the core of what we do, supporting the environment while delivering quality wood products that stand the test of time.

Behind Mokuzai are Graham and Ren Sayer, father and son. Graham has been doing business in Japan for more than 45 years, cultivating partnerships across Japan and Oceania that are grounded in trust, respect, and a mutual passion for timber. Mokuzai carries that legacy forward

Beyond their shared passion for Japanese timber, Graham and Ren are dedicated practitioners of Kendo, the Japanese art of the sword. This bond, both in family and in spirit, shapes the way they approach their work and relationships.

Whether you're sourcing softwoods, artisanal timbers, or unique Japanese species, Mokuzai offers more than dependable supply. We deliver timber that embodies history, design, and culture. Wood you can trust, wood that tells a story, and wood that will stand with you for generations to come.

We currently operate offices in:

  • Shimada City, Shizuoka, Japan

  • Auckland, New Zealand
