Live Edge Sugi 杉 Boards
Wide Japanese Cedar | Sourced from Shizuoka Hill Country | No Two Alike

Boards That Define Their Environment
Our live edge Japanese Cedar boards from Shizuoka occupy a different market position from standard dimensioned timber. These are not sourced for a structural specification. They are sourced because each piece is singular. The live edge, the grain direction, the colour variation across heartwood and sapwood, the placement of knots: none of these repeat. A buyer who specifies this material is designing around the specific piece, not to a catalogue.
The Shizuoka hill country produces Sugi with particularly pronounced grain character. The combination of climate and cultivation history creates boards with distinct heartwood colour and knot patterns that are stable and integral to the wood. Clear to near-clear sections alternate with characterful live knots across each piece. There are no holes, no rot, no insect damage, no splits. The character is the grain, not the defects.
These boards accept finishing treatments that most timber cannot. Charring (yakisugi treatment applied selectively) accentuates the grain and creates dramatic surface contrast. Wire brushing reveals the growth ring texture beneath the surface. Band-sawn finish leaves a raw, directional tool mark that suits certain contemporary aesthetics. The material is versatile precisely because the underlying quality is high.
A Note on Length Selection
Lengths within a consignment are randomly distributed across the three available sizes (2,000 mm / 3,000 mm / 4,000 mm). If your project requires a specific length distribution, advise this at enquiry stage and we will confirm what can be selected from current inventory. Width ranges naturally within 300–450 mm across boards. Exact widths available on request.
