Hinoki 檜 — Japanese Cypress Timber
Rough Sawn Kiln-Dried Boards | Sourced Direct From Japanese Mills

Japan's Most Revered Timber
Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is not just Japan's most prized timber species. It's one of the most rigorously tested building materials in human history. The Grand Shrine of Ise, rebuilt every twenty years for over fourteen centuries using identical techniques and the same species, is built from Hinoki. That is not tradition for tradition's sake. It reflects a material that genuinely resists moisture and bacteria while improving with age.
The aroma, produced by the naturally occurring compound hinokitiol, persists in the wood for years after milling. It is why Hinoki has been the traditional material for Japanese bathhouses, sushi preparation surfaces, and sacred temples for centuries. For wellness applications, spa fit-out, and any project where the material's interaction with the human environment matters, there is no Western softwood substitute.
Our Hinoki is sourced directly from certified Japanese mills, kiln-dried for dimensional stability, and available in three grades covering the full range from 100% clear to live, tight knots. All GOHO certified.
