Where Species Integrity Meets Architectural Scale

For projects where the application is wall panelling, furniture facing, millwork, or wellness interior fit-out, and where solid timber is either impractical or cost-prohibitive, Japanese softwood veneer delivers the species character without the weight and cost of solid boards.

The key advantage these veneers have over imported alternatives is species specificity. Hinoki veneer retains the hinokitiol aroma. Sugi veneer carries the warm heartwood colour. Hiba veneer brings its own distinct character. This isn't generic softwood veneer processed to look Japanese. It's sourced from the same traditional forestry regions as the solid timber, processed to architectural standards for consistency in grain and surface appearance.

Flatsawn and quartersawn cuts are available. Quartersawn produces a tighter, more vertical grain and is the correct specification for applications where dimensional stability under humidity change is critical, such as kitchen millwork or bathroom panelling. Flatsawn shows the broader flame grain characteristic of each species and is typically chosen for visual impact over stability.

Sugi 杉 - Japanese Cedar

Soft pink to deep reddish-brown heartwood. Broad, warm grain. Natural cedar aroma. Best for: feature wall panelling, furniture faces, high-end residential interiors, hospitality fit-out where warm colour is the design intent.

Hiba 檜葉 - Japanese Hiba Cypress

Pale yellow to cream. Uniform fine grain. Naturally resistant to moisture and decay. Mild but distinctive aroma. Best for: bathroom panelling, joinery applications requiring moisture resistance, contemporary minimal interiors.
